Garden. Finally. Planted. The usual suspects this year: potatoes, onions, lettuce, squash, green beans, butter beans (speckled and white), kidney beans, crowder cream peas, purple hull peas, pumpkins, sweet corn and five varieties of tomatoes. Not to mention the flowers and herbs. Last night I came home and rested on the cool, soft soil and just breathed. The wind blew through the trees and the rustling shuffle of the leaves sounded like the sea. And I just lay there with my cheek pressed into the earth. There's such healing and growth in a garden.
Exciting things happening this week. Will check in (and call) someone tomorrow....

Hi Brin!
I have been a lurker for sometime now......I decided it was time to say hello. Or I actually have a minute to type this,I'm a busy stay at home mom to two kiddos. We planted our garden about two weeks ago and I just know how you are feeling. I can't believe that I have two tomatoes growing already! I'm so excited. So between feeding my lovely white tale chickens and running after two kids life just can't get any better. I love stopping by your blog. You have a talent!! I also tried your apple pie recipe and it is TO DIE FOR!!!!! I have some canned away. You are such a down to earth person just by reading your blog. Have a great day!! Nicole from Austin Texas
I purchased most of my seeds this morning! Living in the NW means that there are a few things that I buy as plants unless I had the oppurtunity to start them indoors (with a recent move I didn't). I am now waiting impatiently to get in the dirt. You mentioned a pummpkin a few posts back. Any idea of the top of your head where someone might purchase some seeds? We love pumpkin...especially pumpkin butter. Yummy!
I followed the link to Crunchy Con provided by another commenter and it lead me to this. You should check it out...it's amazing!
So, it would help if I provided the link. (I need a nap!)

I know just what you mean Brin, I love to walk bare foot through a freshly tilled garden, grab a handful of soil and take in the sweet smell! Heaven!
Hello,
Your garden sounds old fashioned and lovely. We have been gone traveling for work with the military this week and I can't wait to get home tomorrow to see how my garden has grown. I am told Spring has burst forth, finally some warm weather. I just wish I had a month off to enjoy it.
I would love to know your family recipe for cooking purple hull peas.

Wow! Planting and growing things. The sweet earth on your hands. Lying in the grass and smelling everything coming to life. Ah ... that is pure heaven. xxoo
Hi Brin,
Catching up .....want to comment on your reference to William Cowper earlier.....one of my favorites from him ....."How thou canst think so well of me and be the God thou art,
Is darkness to my intellect , but sunshine to my heart". hugs, pk Happy gardening.
Hello Brin! I also lurk on your inspirational and inspiring blog.
Thank you for making our journey brighter.
I have two questions...well, maybe three. First, how large is your garden? Could we see a picture of it?
And, can you complete this phrase?
"Howard Payne..the school of romance. If, ....................."
Just wondering if the phrase was still hanging around. (:}
Mary Lou (HPU 1968)
Hi Mary Lou,
What fun! My garden is... not large, really. Six rows about 35 feet long or so? I'll see about getting a picture up once everything pushes up. Right now ... from far enough back to photograph... it looks like a patch of dirt!
And I'm sorry. I can't complete your HPU phrase! Never heard it... (Maybe Jim or Amy has? I bet Jim has. We'll ask him. I will tell you, though, that you won't find anyone who adores HPU more than I.) We still sing to the old Gold and Blue facing Center's heights. Sting 'em, Jackets! :D
Brin
No idea on that one! I'll ask my mother and father in law, they were there in the late '60s.
The only "romantic" one I know is "Ring by Spring, or your money back"
Here it is...
"Howard Payne, the school of romance. If you can't get married here, you 'ain't' got a chance."
I first heard it when my sister attended HPU in the 50's. I guess that was the goal of so many young woman "back then." And, we have
"come a long way, baby." (Another oldie.)
This is my job this weekend... and here I am with allergies. I have a luscious tomato that is begging to get into the ground. I have lots of flower seeds, too.
