The Cabin

I did not wish to take a cabin passage,
but rather to go before the mast and on the deck of the world,
for there I could best see the moonlight amid the mountains.
-Henry David Thoreau

My cabin.

My cabin passage. You could almost pretend you're on a ship, if you wanted. The water lulls you to sleep... always rushing... always flowing... always constant with its gentle lullaby. This is the most peaceful place I've ever been.

I think Millie adores it here almost as much as I. She saw two deer this morning. We followed them down to the river but lost them, so we chased sticks and threw stones.

I'm getting tan and the sun is lightening my hair. I look in the mirror and think this place looks good on me.

Feels good, too. I have a picnic table on the deck and a firepit in the "yard". I use the table all the time - I'm writing from it now, in fact - but I have yet to use the firepit. I'm thinking of making a peach cobbler in my cast iron dutch oven this weekend, though. The grocery store in town, simply marked by a sign that reads: THE GROCERY, has fresh organic peaches. I think I'll try those and let the sugary/cinnamony summer-in-a-pot bubble as I rest in the grass by the river and read.

I have birds in the eaves of the cabin's porch. They're sweet birds - not the loud, squawking ones that jolt you out of your dreams at sun-up. We've all gotten along fine, the wildlife and cabin and Millie and I. I hope it continues. The man at the laundrymat (nearby the grocery; it's called THE LAUNDRY) says they've spotted several black bears this week. A note on my cabin door this afternoon reminded me not to leave food or drinks in the car and immediately dispose of trash, etc. Oh my gosh. I can just see myself - lying on my stomach, tanning my back and staring into the river - and suddenly seeing a bear reflection opposite mine. Scares the jeevies out of me. I'll sleep with one eye open tonight.

So bears aside, I'm in love with my new place. Feeling very Thoreau these days.

Tomorrow we'll do interior pictures, if you're curious. -Brin

The cabin is lovely. And, yes, we would want to see pictures of the inside if we may.

I don't think you'll have a problem with bears as long as you follow the instructions given. Will pray that you will be safe and warm in your little haven with your sweet cabin mate, Millie.

Take care of you. xxoo

Curious as ever. I am sorry...did I miss a post that explained why the left the Freeman house to go here for 6 months? Are you writing and making money to pay off some land and the Freeman house? Solitude?

I am jealous!

I was also wondering why you are at the cabin??? I wish I were somewhere else too. And a cabin and camping sounds wonderful.

I am amazed you have internet there, especially from outside on your picnic table.

I can't imagine anyplace being more "tanning" than Texas although from personal experience I know the Colorado sun is very strong! :)

I have black bears in my yard on a regular basis here in New Jersey. I don't fear them anymore since they have never shown the least bit of interest in my dogs or myself. They are amazing creatures as long as you respect them.

Brin, Your new venture is intriquing. Keep us posted...in great detail. If you are looking for a good book check out A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. If you haven't read it in the past, I think you will really like it. Enjoy your peace and hopefully quiet! Take good care of you both! Michelle

Okay, PLEASE post interior photos. Definitely wanting to see this adorable cabin. :o)

They say nature is God's second book. From the photos, it appears you are in the palm of HIS hand. What a perfect place for you and Millie. :o)

Hi Brin,
Who is looking after Freeman House? Have you hired a house sitter, or is she "home alone"?

It suits you. Too bad you can't box it up and move it home with you.

We hope you're well. I bet the town people are loving having you there and getting to know "that little Texas girl out at the cabin."

This cabin looks idyllic. It looks amazing and peaceful. You are so fortunate to be there. My guess is that you are working at a large ranch or inn for the summer as a pastry chef in the mornings and you have the rest of the day to yourself to reflect.
