Fall Fancy, Part One

By all these lovely tokens
[Fall] days are here,
With summer's best of weather
And autumn's best of cheer.
-Helen Hunt Jackson

Yes, I realize it isn't fall yet. Not yet. But today, as the sky turned charcoal and rain splatted down, the world around Freeman House seemed to acknowledge the eventual decline of summer and stirring of autumn. Even the thunder seemed to consent that a change is coming as it grumbled and rumbled around Freeman House, shaking the old wavy-paned windows and frightening the cat.

I opened the mailbox this evening to an assortment of fall catalogues. They got me itching for a red pea coat and pumpkins and knitted scarves. They also reminded me that somewhere I had several little cross stitch scenes that I'd done... oh, five years ago... and never had framed. I found them, miracle of miracles, and smoothed one out to read: Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin bright / Autumn lantern in the night. Cute. I think I'll keep it.

I was surprised to find (on our most recent poll here) that seven of ten people who read this blog prefer fall to any other season. That's significant, don't you think? Of course, we'd never snub the silent glistening of winter or the lush beauty of spring or the happy abundance of summer. Never. It's just that fall suits us, doesn't it? The chilly air that nips noses and the leaves that skip past and the apple cider in mugs. It's romantic in a quiet sort of way. I like it. But I guess you've already surmised that... what with me rambling on about autumn in August.

I'm just saying is all. I'm just saying that change is on its way. Change is on its way, and seven out of ten of us are leaving the porch light on.

Welcome, autumn. Don't forget to stop here.

Just found your blog and I am so enjoying it! Fall is the best to me too. From mid Sept. to January are my favorite times of the year. October being my fav. Triple love your blog and will check in everyday : ) Makes me want to get out my decorations and look at them. How early do you decorate for Fall?

i'm reckoning that if you didn't live somewhere with fall colours you might not be so in love with fall! ;) hence, my favourite is spring. but i do l-o-v-e it when i get to see fall colours. :) and yes, if you didn't work it out from the name, the spelling would give it away that i'm aussie!

I love fall. Can't wait for it to get here. Life seems to go a little slower in the fall. Not so go-go of summer. Love the sweaters, sweatshirts, colors, raking leaves, baking pumpkin bread. Yes, yes, ALL OF IT!! Blessings

Okay, even though I voted for spring, can I change my mind??? You've made a very persuasive argument for the beauty of autumnal moments....and I just love saying, "autumnal".....

I am another fall person... I like something about all seasons but autumn wins hands down!!
I just pulled a "Pluot Roll"(pluot...a cross between plums and apricots)out of the oven, it's fragrance is so divine...an autumn dessert for sure.
Have a great day, Brin..

I adore fall, however since I live in the blasted desert, I don't really get to enjoy it to it's full potential. We don't have fall colors here (well, we have brown, but brown gets old when you see it every. single. day.) so I try to fill my home with as much color as I can.

I give myself a fall sanctuary by hanging garland of leaves in reds, oranges and yellows and I burn my pumpkin spice scented candle while I bake something with apples in it.

If I can't live in a climate that gives me fall colors, I might as well bring it into my home.

Hopefully someday God will say yes to my dream of moving out of the desert and moving to a place that will give me the beautiful colors of fall.

Until then, I will gawk at your blog and dream of living in a quaint little town like yours.

I voted for fall, change is always good, and I think for most of us, the long hot summer just gets the best of us and we long for chilly nights, yummy smelling candles and better clothes to hide our flaws!lol It's starting to look like fall here, only due to no rain and hot temps. So, share your rain, sounds lovely!

I too love Fall and that thunderstorm was a great relief. I was in my barn when it came, and my barn is metal and the sound of the rain is very loud and lovely. The dogs seek me out when it starts to rain, and they huddled in the barn as I piddled away. Knowing they were safe with mommy. Thanks for the Fall Break.
