I made pepper jelly. I made pepper jelly because I love pepper jelly. There's something funny to me about the whole concept of making jelly out of peppers: it comes out acting like green jell-o gone naughty.
One of my favorite meals is this: red potatoes, cornbread and peas. Zipper Cream Peas. I top my peas with a dollop of pepper jelly and am in heaven.
I realize friends to the north feed these peas to their cattle. Cowpeas, they call them. Please don't remind me of this. Down here, these peas sell for $28 a bushel. I would know. I just gave someone $28 for a bushel of them.
For the pea haters among us, pepper jelly also goes great with cream cheese and crackers. But it's very Texas. It should be eaten on a porch while wearing scuffed leather boots. Just sayin'.

ReplyDeleteWe use pepper jelly with cream cheese and crackers and it is soooo yummy. I never thought I would like it because I am not one for too spicy, but the cream cheese makes it so smooth.

Brin, I've got a bunch of peppers just waiting to get "naughty"! I know something you'd love -- when in Mexico a few years we ran across a paletero (popsicle man) and he had all flavors of popsicles. Including - "chile" flavor!!! It was my very favorite! It was strawberry or cherry red and sweet, yet it have a definite zing of hot peppers! Reminded me of pepper jelly. I haven't been able to find them here. I'm sure they were probably home-made popsicles, but boy were they great!!! I ate 3 in a row!
ReplyDeleteMmmm...I LOVE red pepper jelly over cream cheese with crackers. I "found" out about this a few years ago and it's my favourite party snack now to serve! I've not tried the green pepper jelly....note to self to make soon! Heather
ReplyDeleteOh, I DO love me some pepper jelly--all varieties - I can honestly say that I never met a pepper jelly I didn't like!!! Red, green--whatever--I must say that emerald green jelly looks mighty good!! I like it on cream cheese, but it sounds wonderful on cream peas! We always put Rotel on our pinto beans and crumbled cornbread, and chow chow relish on our peas-crowder, cream, black-eyed--all of em! Looking forward to your shop!

ReplyDeleteI made your jalapeno and cranberry jelly a few years back and it was great on skillet cornbread! Can't wait to try this one. My mom used to make green tomato jelly... can't really remember if I liked it or not.
