I am blessed with amazing friends. Brilliant, captivating, compassionate, sparkling friends. Go-to friends. These folks are there... so patient with me and my little life... and I depend on them. A lot.And they never stop giving. No worry or favor or crazy thing I'm into now has ever been too much for them. They don't throw up their hands and run away from my messy self, which astonishes me every day. They're my everything, and they deserve recognition:

Over the weekend, I had the chance to catch up with a few of them. Lacy and I even spent time knocking around Barnes & Noble, which is my idea of a super time. Several of my friends are English teachers/professors, and Lacy is one of the highest caliber. Her mom's a librarian, so Lacy was born with books in her blood. And when Lacy says you should read a book? You read it. You buy it right then and you read it.
Between us, this is Lacy's Latest List. These are the books I bought over the weekend based on her recommendations. Here's what I'll be flipping through this spring... and what I'm reading right now:
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Just in case you don't have a reading/book/genius friend like Lacy, I thought I'd share.
I'd even share the rest of my incredible friends, too, only we better not mention I sent you. Much more from me and they'll probably assume a different name and move to the mountains of Uzbekistan.
(Are there mountains in Uzbekistan? I'll bet Brian would know....)

ReplyDeleteI just spent the early hours of the morning pricing books at the little thrift store I oversee and The Handmaid's Tale was among them! Now I need to head back and grab it up...sounds like a great deal for a DOLLAR!

Having read a number of your book recommendations, I'm thrilled to see this list even if it comes via Lacy. She sounds like one who would definitely know. Where would we be without friends?!
ReplyDeleteHa! Just got back from the thrift store - how on earth did I mix up "The Handmaid's Tale" and "The Bondwoman's Narrative??!" But that looks good, too; a novel written in the mid-1800's by a runaway slave (and published in '02)...so it's added to MY list now!

ReplyDeleteI read The Handmaid's Tale for a womens literature course in college. Be prepared. It will haunt you. It affected me so much that I bought the DVD on Amazon.

The Book Thief is one of my very favorite books. You won't be able to put it down. Can't wait to look up your other suggestions. They're all new to me:)
ReplyDeleteWow... The Handmaid's Tale. That one is a post waiting to happen! It just so happens that the movie was filmed her in NC, at Duke University, I think. It's a local legend around here.
ReplyDeleteA bunch of us watched the movie in college, and I think about it now, dealing with infertility and adoption in my own life. Not that I want our society to be like the book, it just brought the theme home a little bit.
Because of your book list, I discovered Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
