Bittersweet October.
The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking,
The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking,
perfect pause between the opposing miseries
of summer and winter.

Autumn is here, even in Texas. It's a chilly, drizzly day that begs for a quilt, warm from the dryer, a good book and a pot of bubbling soup.
October tenth is the day that marks the two greatest heartbreaks of my life. Bittersweet October. I'm mellow today, though... unpacking, washing out newly discovered clothes and flipping through long packed-away books. Millie is sitting in a pool of lamp light, curled into a tight ball - no heat in the house yet - and looks ready for a nap. Maybe I'll make something warm to drink and join her.
But just another moment at the window. Beautiful, bittersweet October. What is it about autumn's decay that can prop the heart up and blow winds of hope straight through?
I don't often comment here, but I love reading. I cry with you and laugh with you and I'm one of Millie's biggest fans.
ReplyDeleteI felt like I needed to comment today because I just wrote almost the same thing. Isn't it odd how the dark chill of autumn can make you feel lighter and warmer, if only for the time you stand at the window?
Each new season brings hope but I think it's the magic of fall that really commands our attention and makes us embrace the change. This post was just awesome!
ReplyDeleteI wish our fall was longer. It already is starting to feel like winter. We have had snow already! And no heat in our house yet either.
ReplyDeleteI so miss Texas right now. I am in a state that has been for the most part very warm (mid 80's today) compared to what it should be. Enjoy the wonderful autumn weather and make sure you do curl up under a warm quilt with a warm drink and a Millie footwarmer.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit. I love how you write, and your images! I'm sorry that today is hard for you. Curl up with a quilt with your Millie and thumb through a magazine and lose yourself there for awhile. I walk in my little garden. Or curl up with a quilt with my various pets and thumb through a decorating or gardening magazine!

Bri, sometimes it seems the heartache is never ending. A good day, then poof! a remembering day happens.
ReplyDeleteA new day tomorrow, a chance to start again.
A lit candle and hugs to you.
Love the new banner and typography.
ReplyDelete"What is it about autumn's decay that can prop the heart up and blow winds of hope straight through?"
ReplyDeletejust wow. I agree. Bittersweet October..
*hugs* to you and Millie*
October has always been a time of change for me. I know exactly how you feel sad . . . and yet hopefull
ReplyDeleteWe heat by a wood stove and haven't had a fire yet - it was so warm, then it was raining and raining. Wet wood doesn't burn very well.
ReplyDeleteSo in our cold house this morning I put on socks, my soft, warm robe, lit a candle and had a pot of hot tea. And oh, yes, I struggled with the beagle for the afghan on the couch.
Keep warm. Tonight seems like hot cocoa weather.
Lovely!
