By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather
And autumn's best of cheer.
With summer's best of weather
And autumn's best of cheer.
-Helen Hunt Jackson
A misty autumn morning surrounding flowery golds, reds and greens. Makes me happy.
The kitchen is torn apart just now. I miss it terribly. There's scaffolding, saws, levels, paint cans, and wood everywhere. Boxes of dishes and stacks of pots and pans are crowding halls and rooms. It's a mess. I walk through it countless times each day, excited and disgusted all at once.
But hey! I finally feel as though I have a plan for the kitchen - the layout, the flow, the placement. It was important to me that the kitchen maintain its original integrity; I've kept the floors, the chimney, and the trims. (The kitchen never had cabinets... apparently pieces of furniture stood in as work surfaces... therefore no cabinetry, sink, or appliances were present or salvageable.) I was inspired by the look of something like this kitchen, although adjustments will have to be made. We'll see. Can't wait.
Point is, I suppose, that things are in such a disarray here (I can't cook, for gosh sake!), that fall doesn't seem real just yet. Perhaps in another week it will overtake me.
First I'd better clear the hall so it has room to come on in, huh? -Brin
(By the way, as soon as stuff's plugged in again I'm making Turtle Corn (with peanuts) and sending it to friends. Yum.)

Can't wait to see your new kitchen. When it's all finished I'm sure you'll feel it was all worth it! ~Adrienne~
ReplyDeleteI love the Cottage Living photos! Check out these two blogs - Mary at Dear Little Red House blog and Amongst the Oaks blog- They have similar kitchens that are oh so CHARMING!!!!I love to peek into other people's kitchens to get great ideas!
ReplyDeleteAt least progress is being made. I also can't wait to see. Love your inspiration kitchen.
ReplyDeleteAfter taking seven years to finish renovation on our house, I said "never again." When it was time to move, I found another downtrodden house. The hubby said, "are you sure you want this house?" Both houses turned out beautiful, but my next house will be a brand new one ;)
ReplyDeleteOhhh, your kitchen is going to be wonderful...a place worthy of the cook!
ReplyDeleteLove the farm sink in that kitchen! Good luck with your transformation. I hope to see photos!
ReplyDeleteI love the mantelpiece over the stove in the Cottage Living photo. Hang in there - it will be so good to get this out of the way now so you can enjoy your new kitchen in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas cooking!
ReplyDeleteBrin, the Turtle Corn recipe looks delish. I may just serve this at my fall fest. I have been looking for a carmel corn type recipe to serve and I didn't want the boring and tired carmel version. Besides I thoink it is pretty yucky. I have never liked it or Cracker Jacks.
ReplyDeleteI bet your kitchen turns out great. Can't wait to see it.

Brin without a kitchen IS like fall without color! But the end result will be a treasured room that will insprire you even more! Loved the Cottage Living photos, and I can see that kitchen as yours, with open shelving to display all your fine china, very charming! I can't wait to see the out come! Hang in there! Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine not being able to use my kitchen but it will be so fun once yours is done and you can cook to your heart's content!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hopefully getting a glimpse of your 'new' kitchen..
I hope you have free-standing furniture in your kitchen and not just built-ins. When we built our new-old house eighteen years ago, I used several pieces of furniture as cupboards and pantries. People can't believe our house isn't old! An old house looks odd with all built-ins. In my humble opinion, it destroys the character of an old home.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure whatever you do will be perfect!
Hi Brin. I have just discovered your blog and your profile. We have very similar tastes and interests. I will defintely be back to visit again. I will also be putting a link to your site on my own. Have a happy day amidst the ladders and paint cans and all those great things that will produce your beautiful kitchen.
ReplyDeleteWe lived through one three month long kitchen renovation where we tore down a wall and ripped down to the studs everywhere else. It was long. Did I say long? And me and my microwave were great friends. I also learned to grill out a lot that summer. I was so excited the day my gas stove was delivered...I couldn't find my pans though.
ReplyDeleteI remodeled my kitchen once - it took 5 months - but it was oh so worth it!
ReplyDeleteI am making the Turtle corn this weekend!
BTW, I love my knitted wash cloths!
