Millie's helping prepare the camp fire. Such a good pup. I have a friend flying up from Texas later today and we have a full weekend of sight seeing and adventure planned. Can't wait.
We saw a snake yesterday, Millie and I. She almost hopped right onto it before it began slithering and I began shrieking like a... like a... like a woman who's just seen a slithering snake. That was it. It's been down in the 20s here at night and I've been freezing and tired of walking to the outdoor facilities on the bear look-out. I marched immediately down to the lodge yesterday and told Carole, the proprietor here, "I've seen a snake. I want a different cabin, please."
I got one. It has a loft and a stove and a bathroom! and a heater. Hardly know what to do with myself with all these amenities.

I suspect Millie will miss the old cabin. She'll have to be a bit more supervised here in civilization. But she'll be fine.
You'll be fine, Millie. You'll see.
(By the way, I had so much fun reading about all the cravings! Seemed most agreed that chocolate, caffeine, salt and grease rule "the day". Thanks for your input! And special thanks to the gals who googled Turkish restaurants for me, or invited me to theirs...)
A new cabin! Are you still by the river? What about your wishing island? I thought maybe the river being so close that it would be a bit loud. I'm the gal who wrote to you about Garlands. Did you ever look them up. That piece of land would allow you to do something like that. Their cookbook, which I know you would love, talks about how they got started. You really should sneak a peak. Glad you are having such a great time! Take care.
ReplyDeleteI would move, too, if I saw a snake in my 'yard'. Glad you got an upgrade with indoor plumbing. Millie will adapt and enjoy the new surroundings. Have a great time with your friend. ~Adrienne~
ReplyDeleteI'm back (anonymous - 1st post this am)...I know what I forgot to mention...I was dreaming of snakes this morning. I got up because I was dreaming that snakes were dropping from the bedroom ceiling, so got out of bed and came downstairs, made a pot of hot coffee and got on the computer to check messages and your blog. It kind of freaked me out when I read that you saw a snake and moved to a new cabin. Is that too weird or what! I hate snakes and spiders...anything that crawls. My husband does not believe in exterminating, so we get them. Not earth friendly...so I have to live with them. I hate anything that crawls. Oh well, I just wanted to mention this. I hope your new cabin is free of critters (that crawl).
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun weekend ahead. I'm trying not to be envious of your whole cabin adventure. I thought of another book, you've probably read it, but if not, "Gift from the Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindberg is very thought provoking and perfect for your time away from the business of life.
ReplyDeletecould you please post pictures of your new cabin? would love to see them-
ReplyDeleteelizabeth
So does this mean we get to see new pics of the new cabin??? I'm sure it is nice not having to worry about running into a bear or another snake while going to the bathroom. Congrats on your new place!
ReplyDeleteI read your book post and I'm trying to read War and Peace...but it's slow going. I'm also reading Praying the Names of Jesus which is a kind of neat book. I don't know if you've read it, but you may enjoy it. :)
You and Millie stay safe!
I spent a long time in Colorado last summer, and I saw quite a few snakes on the trails.
ReplyDeleteI'm generally not a fan of anything that slithers, as they tend to represent evil.
I was told, that when snakes show themselves to us, it is a sign of good great change to come.
I choose to accept that even though, I don't really believe in that type of stuff.
Oh I wish I could be there!
ReplyDeleteNice to hear about the cabin change. And I know it's not cool to envy someone, but I want your 20 degree weather. It's been too hot and humid here and I don't like it. Trade you. :) xxoo
ReplyDeleteLove the photos of Millie.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how big she's gotten in the past couple of weeks!
She's beautiful!
YAAAYYYY for running water and flushing toilets! My favorite modern amenities. Who knew when Millie came into your life that you'd be sharing such an adventure?! Isn't life wonderful that way? Sleep warm & take care. I bet you can see the Milky Way....
ReplyDeleteI hope you are happy in the new cabin. Millie is just adorable!
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad you came back. This is such a lovely blog. I took a break reading when you took a break around the holidays...and what a lovely summer surprise to find updated postings. You write wonderfully and your pictures are great too. Thanks for putting a piece of yourself out there!
ReplyDeleteGood thing you moved. I almost stepped on a rattle snake this week on my Colorado Springs morning run. The sound of his rattle still unsettles me.

ReplyDeleteGood one on getting a bathroom.
Yikes I hate snakes too and we have one in our back yard a 5 ft black snake. Yeah I know they aren't harmless but it still gives me the creeps when I see it. Ick.
stay safe.. and warm.

Oh a new cabin Brin..can we see the inside? Oooh indoor plumbing...a must!
ReplyDeleteSnakes give me the shivers..I'd want to move too.
Oh Millie will adapt well as long as she has you by her side!
Oooohhhhh, we want pics of the new cabin too!
ReplyDeleteHi, stranger. Been awhile since I've posted a comment...but, just had to tell you how cute Millie is....absolutely adorable.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I went to the farmers market with my Mom :), I bought my first batch of strawberries so what a delight to see your new strawberry header! Mmmmm, strawberry sugar bread! It's still one of my favorite Brin recipes. Miss Brin, just one snake? :)...I doubt they are the kind who can hurt you in cold conditions, but then I'm not a snake expert either LOL....I think Millie will protect you :). Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteMN Kathi :)
Brin,
ReplyDeleteThis is my first post on your blog, but I must tell you that after I found it, I couldn't stop reading. My husband was like, "What on earth are you doing?" I read like a woman obsessed, and I cried with you and laughed with you and feel like I've known you a million years.
I would read portions to him (after turning on the windshield wipers which I was forced to atttach to my glasses so I could even see to read), and he would cry, too! Girl, you are a very talented writer and wise beyond your years, a great witness for the Lord, and someone I wish lived just around the corner!
And speaking of living, I've lived in and redone sev-er-al old houses, and yes, survived to tell about it. (It's a mental illness, don't you know!) For the most part, we hire out the work, but I can swap some pretty good tales with you about standing around on ladders with a church key, cutting out cracks in plaster. Like you, I've fallen in love with certain houses that other people thought suitable for the wrecking ball. Funny how after you fix them up, everyone suddenly sees what you saw when they thought you were a likely candidate for shock treatment! ;-)
At some point, I hope to have a blog up and running, but with a broken computer, that's kinda difficult at present. In the mean time, I'll just enjoy reading yours when I can nudge Mr. Magpie off his laptop!
Thanks for sharing with us. Here's hoping you and Millie have the best summer of your lives! Looks like you're off to a good start. Just stay away from those pesky snakes!
The Lord's blessings (extra special ones) be yours,
Sheila
P.S. I didn't answer this in the previous thread, but chocolate is my number one indulgence. This summer, it's been chocolate ice cream! But oh, girl, how I remember the blackberry cobbler of my youth! Our cook would make it with fresh blackberries that we would help pick from the pasture behind our house, and she'd top it off (hot from the oven) with vanilla ice cream. Yum and double yum!
At least you have a better cabin out of it so maybe the snake sighting was a gift? :-)
